John’s international eventing career began with Outback Red when they represented the USA in the 1991 Pan American Games. Since then, he’s been a frequent member of the top ten USEA Rider of the Year rankings, and in 1994 won the National DeBroke Championships. In 2002, riding Carrick, John finished in 2nd place at the Rolex CCI**** with less than a half point separating him from the winner. John earned team gold and finished 4th in the individual competition at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, a year later earning 4th at the Burghley CCI**** with Carrick. In 2004, John earned team bronze in Athens, Greece.
Along with being an accomplished international event rider, John is also a USEF "R" eventing course designer and an FEI “I” course designer. He has created courses at many of today’s most popular venues, including the 2005 and 2006 American Eventing Championship courses (novice to advanced), Jersey Fresh CCI** & CCI***, Greenwood CIC** CIC*, and Otter Creek CIC** & CIC*, Pine Top, Rocking Horse, and Southern Pines. John has even designed a FEI course in Mexico.
John and his wife Ellen are the sole caretakers of all their horses on their farm outside Southern Pines, North Carolina. They enjoy finding young talented horses and personally bringing them through the top levels of the sport.
